FAQ: Completing the ALEKS Placement Test

The ALEKS placement assessment will be introduced in late October 2016. New students should refer to their admissions letter for information about placement testing.

When you are ready to register at the ALEKS website, click on the ALEKS tile in the "New Student Orientation (IU Kokomo)" task center at one.iu.edu. Use the ALEKS tile for accessing the preparation and learning module as well as assessments.

Isn't ALEKS just another placement test?

  • ALEKS is an assessment tool: It will help you to identify your Mathematical strengths and weaknesses.

  • ALEKS is also a learning tool: It will provide you with a personalized tutorial for regaining mastey of skills that you have forgotten.

  • The ALEKS Placement Assessment covers material from Basic Math through Precalculus and will take approximately 2 hours to complete.

  • There is no penalty for incorrectly answering a question on the assessment.  The most important thing is that you take the assessment seriously and give it an honest effort so that the assessment truly reflects your level of knowledge and math preparedness.

  • Most placement test companies offer just a few sample questions to help you prepare, but with ALEKS you can work complete an entire PRACTICE assessment using your personal computer. This will make you much better prepared when you take the proctored assessment at the IU Kokomo Testing Center.

Who needs to take the ALEKS placement assessment?

  • Prior to registering in their first mathematics course at IU Kokomo, all entering freshman students are required to complete a proctored ALEKS mathematics placement assessment for appropriate course placement.

  • Students transferring to IU Kokomo who need a mathematics course will also be required to take the mathematics placement exam unless they have transfer credit for a college level mathematics course equivalent to a course offered at IU Kokomo, and no more than two years has elapsed since their last mathematics enrollment. 

  • Non-Indiana University dual-credit mathematics courses taken in high school will not exempt students who need further mathematics courses from taking the mathematics placement exam. 

  • Students who have earned an AP Calculus score of 3 or higher within the past two years do not need to take the ALEKS placement assessment.

  • Any exceptions will be made by the advisor in consultation with the mathematics faculty. 

Where do I go to take an ALEKS assessment?

  • The ALEKS PRACTICE assessment can be completed from any computer with a dependable internet connection. If necessary, you can exit the practice assessment and resume working at a later time, as long as it is completed within 48 hours of your entry into the assessment.

  • An ALEKS proctored placement assessment is required to determine your mathematics course placement. Your proctored placement assessment must be completed in the IU Kokomo Testing Center. You can schedule a testing appointment by calling the Test Center at 765 455 9395.

    • You are allowed a total of 4 proctored assessments.

    • You must wait at least 24 hours between assessments.
    • You will also be required to make use of the Prep and Learning Module to strengthen your skills before you will be allowed to repeat a proctored assessment.

Why is this required of me?

  • Your ALEKS placement result will help you and your advisor to select your first mathematics course at IU Kokomo.
    • If you enroll in a class that is too easy, you will be wasting your tuition and your time. You are also likely to be bored!
    • If you enroll in a class for which you are not sufficiently prepared, you will be at risk of failing. This will also waste tuition and time and will lead to personal frustration and stress.
  • If you think your initial placement result does not accurately reflect what you know, you may use the ALEKS Prep and Learning module to strengthen your skills and then schedule another assessment. You are permitted up to a total of 4 proctored assessments.

When should I complete my ALEKS placement assessment?

  • You must complete an ALEKS PROCTORED Placement assessment before you meet with your academic advisor to discuss your course options.

  • You will have access to the ALEKS Prep and Learning module for up to six months. To take full advantage of this resource

    • You should begin the ALEKS placement process any time after March 1 if you plan to enroll in the Fall semester.
    • You should begin the ALEKS placement process any time after July 1 if you plan to enroll in the Spring semester.
    • You should begin the ALEKS placement process any time after December 1 if you plan to enroll in the Summer semester.

I'm ready How do I start?

  • Click on the ALEKS tile in the "New Student Orientation (IU Kokomo)" task center in one.iu.edu to register at the ALEKS website.
  • You will be asked to enter your IU ADS username and passphrase.
  • After completing the brief ALEKS tutorial, enter and complete the practice assessment. You will be asked to confirm your understanding of your academic honesty responsibilities according to the IU Honor Code.
  • Use the provided link to see which IU Kokomo mathematics course you are eligible to take.
  • Use the Prep and Learning module to review and strengthen skills that you have forgotten before you schedule your proctored assessment.

If you have not yet set up your IU computing account:

  • Go to https://one.iu.edu
  • Search for “New Student Orientation” and scroll down to "Task Centers"
  • Click on "New Student Orientation (IU Kokomo)"
  • Click on the “Set up my first account” tile. 
  • You’ll enter some personal information like name and birthdate, plus your IU University ID number.  If you are a new student you can find your IU University ID number in your admissions letter.
  • The account should be ready in about a day at the most.
