Master of Public Management

General Policies

Following are some important general policies regarding the M.P.M. program.

Student Course Load

Most M.P.M. students at IU Kokomo are employed full time in positions of responsibility. The high standards and workload in our M.P.M. program requires considerable time and effort that must be balanced with other life and work demands. For this reason, part-time students are advised to take no more than 6 credit hours in fall and spring, and 3 credit hours during any one summer session. Course schedules are constructed accordingly, with most courses offered after 4 p.m.

Transfer Credit

Students admitted into our M.P.M. degree program may be allowed to transfer a maximum of 9 credit hours or 3 graduate level courses into the degree program. These courses must have been completed at an accredited university, consisting of a graduate program that is comparable in curriculum and academic rigor to the M.P.M. program at IU Kokomo. The Graduate Program Director or Dean will assess each potential transfer course with regard to these criteria.

Academic Standards

Graduation with our M.P.M. degree requires a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 or a B average. A student whose GPA falls below 3.0 will be placed on probation and will be required to bring the GPA back to 3.0 within the next 9 credit hours of course work. Failure to remove the deficiency in this timeframe will result in immediate dismissal from the program. A student cannot compensate for deficient course work by completing more credits beyond those required in the program of study.

Shortly after admission to the program, each M.P.M. student will plan a program of study with the M.P.M. director. In addition, M.P.M. students seeking career development information are encouraged to confer with the faculty in their area of interest. The IU Kokomo Career Services office is available for career information, and students’ own employers often provide career planning assistance.

Degree Application

Candidates for a degree are expected to meet proper deadlines for the filing of degrees. Graduation dates at IU Kokomo occur in December, May, and August. Students planning to graduate in December must apply for their degrees by September 15. The application deadline for May and August graduations is February 1.

Decision-Making and Appeal Process

The M.P.M. director is the program executive, responsible for day-to-day operations, admissions, and program advising. The M.P.M. director refers exceptional cases to the Dean and M.P.M. Faculty for decision, upon written request by the applicant or student.

Extended X Business Graduate Policy

Effective with the spring 2005 semester, graduate students who wish to repeat a course in which they received a grade below an "A" may repeat the course following approval from the M.P.M. director. The course in which the student re-enrolls should be the same course which is being replaced. However, courses with similar content will be taken into account. A student may exercise the Extended X option for no more than two courses, totaling no more than 6 credit hours during the entire M.P.M. program. In addition, a student may use the Extended X option only once for any given course. A student who has failed a course due to academic dishonesty may not retake that course for grade replacement under this policy. When a student retakes a course under this policy, the grade for the repeated course is the final grade even if that grade is lower than the grade the student received the first time the course was taken. To exercise the Extended X option, students must obtain an Extended X form from the M.P.M. director, secure the appropriate signatures and return the form to the M.P.M. director.
