Utility Failure

In the event of a major utility failure:

• Immediately notify Physical Plant at ext. 273.

• Physical Plant Emergency staff will respond to evaluate the situation and take corrective action.

•  If you are trapped in the elevator, use the emergency phone to notify the Physical Plant. If the emergency phone does not work,turn on the alarm. 

• Physical Plant and/or IUPD will order a building evacuation if the safety of faculty, staff and/or students is threatened.

•  In the event an evacuation deemed necessary: 

• A building evacuation will occur when the fire alarm sounds and/or when notified by IUPD or Physical Plant emergency staff.

• Assist the disabled in exiting the building if possible! Remember that the elevators are reserved for disabled persons.

• Do not use elevators in case of fire or during power failures.

• Once outside, move to a clear area at least 500 feet awayfrom the affected building(s). Keep the walkways, fire lanes, and hydrants clear for emergency crews.

• If requested, assist the emergency crews as necessary. 

• A campus incident command center may be set up near the emergency site. Keep clear of the command center unless you have official business.

• Do not return to an evacuated building unless told to do so by a university official.
