Unusual Smell/Gas Leak

In the event of an unusual smell or gas leak:

• Immediately notify Physical Plant at ext. 273.

• Physical Plant will respond to the area to evaluate the situation and take corrective action.

• Physical Plant and/or IUPD will order a building evacuation if the safety of faculty, staff and/or students is threatened.

• Physical Plant and/or IUPD will contact the appropriate emergency response personnel. The IUPD will establish a safe perimeter. All persons except those needing to enter will be restricted.

• A Physical Plant emergency staff representative will stand by to answer any questions the fire department may have.

• Do not return to the building unless a university official gives an all-clear.

Gas Leak or smell

In the event of a gas leak:

• Evacuate the building.

• Do not make calls from inside the building. Phones are capable of producing a spark, which could start a fire or explosion. Contact Physical Plant at 455-9273 and IUPD at 455-9363 from a phone outside and away from the building.

• Do not turn any light switches on or off, and do not plug or unplug electrical appliances. These activities can produce a spark that could start a fire or explosion.

• Open doors to promote cross-ventilation.

• The IUPD will establish a safe perimeter. All persons except those authorized to enter will be restricted.

• A Physical Plant emergency staff representative will stand by to answer any questions the fire department may have.

• Do not return to the building unless a university official gives an all-clear.
