Alumni Hall of Fame

IU Kokomo Alumni Association Hall of Fame Lunch was held November 22, 2014 in the Kelley Student Center,
Honoring Dr. Kathleen Golightly, John Hughey, George Plotner, and Tom Sugar on the campus of Indiana University Kokomo.

2014 Inductees

Tom Sugar

Tom Sugar BA'02

Tom is senior vice president of Complete College America, a national non-profit public policy and advocacy organization that promotes legislation, policies and practices to significantly increase college graduation rates and close attainment gaps for underrepresented populations. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from IU Kokomo, and then was deputy district director for U.S. Rep. Jim Jontz. Sugar was director of communications and planning for Indiana Governor Evan Bayh, and then was Bayh’s campaign manager when he ran for the U.S. Senate. He was Bayh’s chief of staff from 1999 to 2009, when he co-founded Complete College America. He lives in Zionsville.

George Plotner

George Plotner BA'73

George is the owner and founder of MRC Staffing Solutions, an executive search company in Centerville, Ohio. He began his career in 1973 at age 22, as personnel manager for the Essex Group International. He was corporate vice president human resources, vice president quality and human resources, and manager of human resources and employee involvement at the Huffy Corp. in Dayton, Ohio, before starting his company in 1995. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from IU Kokomo in 1973 and a Master of Arts in management from Antioch University Midwest, and completed the strategic human resources program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1991. He lives in Centerville, Ohio.

John Hughey

John Hughey AS'76, BGS'81

John is chairperson of the Division of Allied Health Sciences at Indiana University Kokomo. He earned an Associate of Science in radiologic technology in 1976, and a Bachelor of Science in general technical studies in 1981 from IU Kokomo. He later completed a Master of Business Management Science from Indiana Wesleyan University. He has been a senior staff technologist at IU Health Tipton Hospital, and an assistant clinical professor and director of radiologic science department at IU Kokomo since 2002. He developed the curriculum for the associate degree radiography program and the bachelor’s degree medical imaging programs, and led the proposal for the campus’s bachelor’s degree in health sciences. He’s also created minors in sports management and marketing and coaching. He also is a successful softball coach, leading Tipton girls’ softball teams to three state championships and two national regional championships. He lives in Tipton.

Kathleen Golightly

Dr. Kathleen Golightly BA'88, MD'92

Kathleen is the senior physician at Meridian Adult Medicine, which is part of the St. Vincent Medical Group. She began her career by earning her Registered Nurse degree from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in South Bend. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital, Kokomo, while completing a Bachelor of Arts with highest distinction in biological and physical sciences at IU Kokomo in 1988. She then continued her education at the IU School of Medicine, earning her M.D. and the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Achievement Citation from the American Medical Women’s Association. She spent six years homeschooling her two sons, in addition to her medical career. She’s received the Caring Angels Award from St. Vincent Hospital & Health Services Foundation three times. She lives in Indianapolis.
