Satisfactory Academic Progress

Federal regulations require that Indiana University Kokomo establish a policy to monitor the academic progress of students who apply for and/or receive financial assistance. A student must be admitted to the university and enrolled in a degree-seeking program to be eligible for assistance. The Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards listed below apply to all aid applicants at Indiana University Kokomo whether or not aid was received for prior coursework. In addition all students, whether receiving aid or not, must meet Indiana University Kokomo academic standards

How often is progress checked?

Your progress at Indiana University Kokomo will be checked when you apply for aid, submit a FAFSA, or after spring grades from the prior year are recorded, whichever is later.

What are the requirements

Recipients of federal financial assistance are expected to attend classes throughout the term. Repayment of federal aid already received may be required if it is determined that the student stopped attending classes but did not officially withdraw from the University. To remain eligible for financial assistance, a student must demonstrate satisfactory progress toward completion of their degree according to the following standards:

Requirements for Undergraduates for summer 2013

A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better.
Successfully complete 75% of total attempted coursework
Complete their degrees in no more than 150% of the published credit hours requirement, appeal/monitoring begins at 150 hrs.

Requirements for Undergraduates for 2014

A program grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better.
Successfully complete 67% of total attempted coursework
Complete their degrees in no more than 150% of the published credit hours requirement, appeal/monitoring begins at 150 hrs

Attempted coursework includes courses that are repeated or FX'ed. Courses dropped at the beginning of the term where no W grade is assigned (generally the first week of the course), are not counted as attempted courses. Attempted coursework also includes all accepted transfer credit hours.Grades of W, F, FN, FNN, FX, NC, and I (Incomplete) are not considered successful completion of a course.

Undergraduates seeking a second bachelor's degree will be evaluated by the same standards as other undergraduate students.

                    Freshmen - GPA 2.0+
                    Sophomores - GPA 2.25+
                    Junior/Senior - GPA 2.5+

Requirements for Graduates summer 2013

Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.
Successfully complete 75% of total attempted coursework.
Graduate students enrolled in a Master’s of Education must complete their degree in no more than 50 credit hours attempted.
Graduate students enrolled in a Master's of Nursing must complete their degree in no more than 52 credit hours attempted.
Graduate students enrolled in a Master’s of Public Management must complete their degree in no more than 50 credit hours attempted
Graduate students enrolled in a Master’s of Business Administration must complete their degree in no more than 60 credit hours attempted
Graduate students enrolled in a Master’s of Arts in Liberal Studies must complete their degree in no more than 50 credit hours attempted
Teacher’s Certification students, although restricted to loans at the undergraduate level, are evaluated for SAP as graduate students.

Requirements for Preparatory Coursework

Students who have received a bachelor's degree and are taking preparatory coursework in order to gain admission to an IU Kokomo graduate program are permitted, if approved, to receive loans at the undergraduate level for up to a twelve month period.

Such students must list all the classes they will be taking over the next twelve month period as pre-requisites for admission to their IU Kokomo graduate program of choice. The IU Kokomo graduate program that the student wishes to enter must affirm that once the preparatory coursework is successfully completed, the student will, in fact, be admitted to the program. Please note that this is for coursework that must be completed prior to admission, not coursework to raise a GPA for admission purposes.

What happens if I repeat a course?

All attempts for a course count for completion rate monitoring as well as maximum timeframe.

What happens if I fail to meet the SAP requirements

A notice will be posted to your Onestart account concerning your academic progress status. Your financial aid will be terminated until you meet SAP standards or have an appeal approved by the Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeals Committee.

What if I have extenuating circumstances?

Inability to attend classes due to lack of financial aid is not an extenuating circumstance. Students who fail to meet these standards and have mitigating circumstances may appeal to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid by completing the appropriate Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal form. The form may be picked up at the Financial Aid Office or downloaded from our Web site, www.iuk.edu/financial aid then Satisfactory Academic Progress these appeals should be submitted on line.

Loss of SAP

Appeals Process

The Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeals Committee reviews each appeal to determine student eligibility for continued financial aid. The Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeals Committee reviews formal appeals within 30 business days of receipt. No deferments of Indiana University Kokomo charges will be granted during the review timeframe. You may check your appeal status by accessing the SELF-SERVICE tab on OneStart and monitoring your official IU Kokomo email account.

If your appeal is approved you will be placed on a contract to monitor your progress and compliance with the terms of your approval. Your course selection, completion and grade performance will be monitored to make sure that you are compliant with your contract on a semester by semester basis.

Failure to make SAP

Students who fail to make SAP and who have an appeal denied can regain eligibility by meeting the criteria established above. However a student cannot regain eligibility simply by being out of school for a set amount of time or by paying for a set number of classes out-of-pocket.

Parents of students who are denied financial assistance by failing to meet these academic standards are not eligible for a Parent PLUS Loan.
