Degree Requirements

The degree includes 120 hours of total course work including the following:

IU Kokomo General Education Requirements (44 credit hours):

  • Communication (9 credits; W131, W132, S121) 
  • Quantitative Literacy (6 credits; M118 or higher, plus K300 Statistics for psych major)
  • Critical Thinking (3 credits)
  • Cultural Diversity (3 credits)
  • Ethics and Civic Engagement (3 credits)
  • Social Science (6 credits; P103 completes psychology major requirement, plus one course from another discipline)
  • Humanities and Arts (6 credits; one course in Arts and one course in Literature or Philosophy
  • Physical and Life Sciences (8 credits; two courses from two different disciplines, including one lab)

Additional General Education Requirements (4-5 credit hours):

  • One Physical or Biological Science course (must be a lab course)

Psychology Major Requirements, Psychological Science Track (42-45 credit hours; all psychology courses require a grade of C- or higher to count towards the major):

Required Courses (an additional 12-18 credit hours beyond campus General Education):

  • P103 General Psychology (3 credits)
  • P211 Methods of Experimental Psychology (3 credits) or P259 Introduction to Psychological Inquiry (3 credits; required for students declaring the psychology major in Fall 2012 or later)
  • P216 Lifespan Development (3 credits)
  • K300 Statistical Techniques (3 credits)
  • P355 Experimental Methods (3 credits; not required for students who declared a psychology major before Fall 2012)
  • P459 History and Systems of Psychology (3 credits)
  • P493 & P494 Supervised Research I & II (6 credits)

Two of the following four courses (6 credits):

  • P303 Health Psychology
  • P319 Psychology of Personality
  • P320 Social Psychology
  • P324 Abnormal Psychology

One of the following two courses (3 credits):

  • P325 Psychology of Learning
  • P335 Cognitive Psychology

One of the following two courses (3 credits):

  • P326 Neuroscience
  • P390 Special topics in Psychology:  Psychopharmacology
One additional psychology course from one of the two main course clusters above (3 credits)

Psychology electives

  • If declaring the major before Fall 2012, complete 2 electives (6 credits)
  • If declaring the major in Fall 2012 or afterwards, complete 1 elective (3 credits)

Additional courses to total 120 credit hours. 

Students will be advised to take additional elective courses in mathematics and in other scientific fields.
