Business and Community Outreach

Business and Community Outreach

Is your company or nonprofit organization interested in collaborating with IU Kokomo? There are many ways to work with IU Kokomo.

  • Community Service — Work with our faculty and staff to develop community service projects for individuals, groups, or classes
  • Faculty Consultants — Utilize the expertise of our highly trained faculty members to advance your business
  • Customized Training for Businesses — Let our experienced faculty or staff train your employees in the latest business practices, computer proficiency, language and culture skills, or diversity.

The Office of Business and Community Outreach can work with you to design an internship, community service program, or training program that will suit the particular needs of your business or organization. Contact Candy Thompson, Assistant Director for Business and Community Outreach, at (765) 455-9406 or caanorma@iuk.edu.

Service Learning and Community Service

If your company needs a business or marketing plan, research, new Web site, computer database, or some other type of service or outreach effort, IU Kokomo students can help. We can identify individual students, student groups, or students enrolled in courses with a service component who can help with your project. Please contact Candy Thompson to arrange a meeting to discuss your needs at (765) 455-9406 or e-mail caanorma@iuk.edu.

Customized Training for Business

Today's job market training is a most valuable tool, for both the employee and the employer. The Office of Business and Community Outreach can help you with your training needs. Listed below are a few of the areas in which we offer training. Please contact us if you are in need of a particular type of training that is not listed. We can custom design training to fit your needs.

Computer Training

We provide a diverse array of computer training to take the skills of your employees to the next level. Generally, training is offered at our on-site computer lab; however,we can also send instructors to your site. We typically offer training in Microsoft Office applications and the Windows operating system, but if you don't see the training that you need listed, please contact us. We can build a custom computer training program just for you.

Business Training

We offer a variety of business training to suit your needs. Training can be provided in areas such as:

  • Communication skills
  • Supervisory Management
  • Front Office Management
  • Nonprofit Management
  • Professional Business Writing

Language Training

We offer training in Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Italian, and other languages for business, health care, police and fire professionals, or any group as needed.

Cultural Competence and Diversity Training

With today's changing workforce, many employees lack the skills needed to understand and communicate effectively with those culturally or characteristically different from themselves. Operationally defined, cultural competence is the integration and transformation of knowledge about individuals and groups of people into specific standards, practices, and attitudes used to increase the quality of services; thereby producing better outcomes. We have the expertise. Let us train your employees!

English as a Second Language Training

What is ESL? ESL stands for English as a Second Language. Our program teaches American English to individuals now living in the United States whose native language is something other than English.

Who would benefit from ESL classes?

Anyone who needs to learn American English or just practice their skills can benefit from ESL classes. Whatever English proficiency students bring with them, ESL will enhance their skills used in business, education, and everyday life. This includes all age groups, both businessmen/women and family members (as young as three years old). No matter the length of their stay, newcomers can benefit greatly from ESL classes.

These seminars can be arranged with students and/or companies on an as-needed basis. To register for ESL classes, or if you have any questions, please contact Cathy Archer at (765) 455-9426.

Is what you need not listed here? Contact us and let us know what you need. Call or e-mail Candy Thompson at (765) 455-9406 or caanorma@iuk.edu
