Elementary Education

The Elementary Education Program is known for high expectations, field experiences from the start, and a supportive environment with the following key features:

• A cohort approach composed of teacher candidates progressing through the program of study together, from entrance into the teacher education program through graduation.
• Small class size to allow for higher degrees of individual mentoring and instructor-student interactions.
• Program is grounded in diverse field experiences in a variety of settings at the elementary school level.
• Program is tailored to meet the Indiana Office of Educator Licensing and Development (OELD) Standards, both content and developmental in the areas of knowledge, performance, and dispositions, Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) Standards and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Standards.
•  The initial teacher education program is fully accredited at the state (OELD) and national (NCATE) level and licensure programs have been approved by the Indiana Department of Education.
• Technology is integrated throughout the program.

Upon completion of all degree and program requirements, students will be eligible to apply to the Indiana Department of Education Office of Educator Licensing and Development (OELD) for licensure in Elementary Education. Teachers would be eligible to teach kindergarten through grade six, if grade six is housed in an elementary setting.

Degree Requirements

The Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education is a program of study that includes three categories of courses:

• Content Education courses provide a broad knowledge base for classroom teachers
• Professional Education courses connect theory with practice
• Electives and courses in a minor area make you a well-rounded individual

Teacher candidates progress from observation to participation to instruction. Upon formal admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP), candidates develop and implement instruction within the local schools. Finally, candidates demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and dispositions as educators through successful student teaching and completing an action research project.

A minor is required for Elementary Education majors.  Special Education is one of the optioins for a minor.
