The Digital Media Center, located inside the IU Kokomo Library, is a multimedia production facility that allows the creativity of its users to take form. The world increasingly communicates through digital media, and the courses at IU Kokomo reflect that in terms of projects assigned to students. For instance, Spanish students might be asked to record a podcast instead of writing a paper or essay, nursing students might be asked to create a video presentation on a specific medical topic, and journalism students might be asked to record an audio interview. The Digital Media Center is designed to offer users the resources they might use to complete these multimedia projects.
The Digital Media Center is open when the library is open. See Library hours for more details. The Center is open to Indiana University Kokomo students, faculty, and staff. The main room of the Digital Media Center is open on a first come, first served basis. The two enclosed production rooms are available from the opening of the library until 15 minutes before closing.
The Digital Media Center offers two soundproofed production rooms that may be reserved by currently-enrolled IU Kokomo students or University faculty. Users may reserve these rooms by contacting the Circulation/Reserves service desk either in person or via phone at (765) 455-9513. Users must present a valid student or faculty ID in order to check out the key for one of the production rooms. Users may check out production room keys at the Circulation/Reserves service desk. Users are responsible for locking the rooms and returning the keys at the end of their two-hour time periods.
Users may reserve a production room for a two-hour time period. If no one is signed up for the room at the end of the two-hour time period, users may renew the production room for an additional two hours. Production rooms may be reserved up to one week in advance for a two-hour period and are reserved on a first come, first served basis.
The Digital Media Center offers six Mac multimedia stations and two production rooms. The six computers are dual-boot systems that offer resources from both the Microsoft and Apple operating systems. See below for details on the software available on these machines.
The library also offers equipment that may be checked out by currently-enrolled students or faculty with valid student or faculty IDs. Equipment may be checked out at the Circulation/Reserves service desk. Equipment loan periods vary; please see the equipment list below for loan periods.
The computers in the Digital Media Center are pre-loaded with software that will help you create audio, video, image, and/or animated projects that are playable or viewable on a variety of devices. Such software includes: Adobe Illustrator; Adobe Dreamweaver; Adobe Photoshop; Movie Maker; Lightroom; and Scratch. View the complete Standard Software Build list here.
Video, audio, and other multimedia files are often quite large files, and, as you edit, merge, and splice the files, they may grow larger. It is the user's responsibility to save work prepared on computers within the Digital Media Center. Before leaving computer stations, we recommend users save their project files to some form of digital storage. If you are in need of a digital storage system, the IU Kokomo Bookstore sells both CD-Rs and CD-RWs, as well as USB flash drives. For users working on large projects or for extended periods of time on particular projects, we recommend the purchase of a personal external hard drive.
The Digital Media Center offers printing services to a large format printer, which is located in the Copy Room within the library. Our PDF help document provides more details on printing files to the large format printer, as well as large format document printing costs.
The Digital Media Center is unable to cut/trim or laminate documents printed on the large format printer. Printing large format files costs additional money, but students may add funds to their student printing accounts by using the "Add Value Station" in the copy room or by contacting the IT Helpdesk, located near the Ask A Librarian service desk on the first floor of the library.
The library offers information technology and technical books through an online e-book collection called Books24x7. Students and faculty may access this resource by navigating to the library homepage, clicking on the Databases A-Z guide, and then selecting "B" to locate Books24x7. Please Ask a Librarian if you need additional help finding or using this resource.
Online tutorials for using the equipment in the Digital Media Center, provided by the Information Technology department, are accessible on the "How To..." - Self-Tutorials page. Scroll down to the "Digital Media Center Tools" section to browse the available tutorials. For additional help or instruction, please contact the IT Helpdesk at firstname.lastname@example.org or (765) 455-9315.
Additional video tutorials on software packages such as Adobe Production Premium and Adobe After Effects are available for all IU students and faculty from Lynda.com. Visit the IT Training page for more details on accessing these tutorials.
