Library Reserves

IU Kokomo faculty may place electronic and/or physical materials on reserve for students in their classes. Read on to learn more about the available reserve options.

Placing Materials on Reserve & Oncourse/Canvas

Because Oncourse and Canvas provide students with easy access to course information, faculty are encouraged to post materials that are in special or high demand for class assignments to their class Oncourse or Canvas sites. Hyperlinks to articles from many of the library's electronic databases can readily be posted within Oncourse and Canvas with the help of the library's Proxy Link Generator tool. Faculty may also arrange for student Course Packs through the IU Kokomo Bookstore.

When neither Oncourse/Canvas nor Course Packs are appropriate, faculty may request that materials be placed in the Reserves Collection located in the Circulation area of the library. Circulation periods for reserve items are set according to faculty instruction. The available circulation periods are:

A maximum of three copies of an item may be placed on reserve; in most cases, though, fewer copies will be sufficient.

Items eligible for reserve status include circulating library materials, photocopies, faculty-owned materials, and media materials. All photocopies and faculty-owned material must comply with current copyright law. A barcode and reserve label will be placed on faculty-owned material.

Ineligible items include library-owned reference books, periodicals, microforms, materials belonging to other libraries (e.g. interlibrary loan materials), and rental materials (e.g. Bestseller/McNaughton collection). Faculty-generated video or audio recordings, whether taped off-air or copied from another tape, are also ineligible due to copyright restrictions.

Placing Articles on Reserve

Due to the strict nature of the U.S. Copyright Code and litigation involving photocopying for educational use, the following guidelines have been established for reserve photocopy use:

Reserve Request Form

Faculty members must complete a Reserve Request Form (PDF) in order to place materials on reserve. If multiple items need to be placed on reserve for one course, you may complete only one form so long as you also attach a sheet of paper with a list of all of the items. The copyright information must be completed before any material can be placed on reserve.

Reserve materials are processed at the Circulation/Reserves service desk on a first-come, first-served basis and require a minimum of 2 working days for processing. Materials may not be placed on reserve on a permanent basis, and materials are removed from reserves annually.

Reserve Material Use

Students must have their IU Kokomo library card in order to check out reserve materials.
